Mixed Media Perfumery

Practical Weekend Course in Glastonbury

Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th September 2026

Time: 10:00 to 17:30 hours

Cost: £450

Location: School of Creative Perfumery / Marina Barcenilla Parfums, Glastonbury, UK.

Mixed media perfumery opens a new world of creative possibilities. By combining the richness and complexity of natural materials with the precision and versatility of pure molecules, we can create fragrances that are more expressive, more contemporary and more technically refined.

This two-day course is designed for people who already have some experience using both naturals and synthetics. It’s not a beginner’s course. If you’re new to perfumery or have never used synthetic ingredients, we recommend first taking our Introduction to Natural Perfumery and/or Creating Mixed Media Perfumes online courses before joining this practical weekend.

Over the weekend, we’ll work with a carefully curated palette of natural materials and key synthetic aroma chemicals. You’ll smell, compare, evaluate and blend, learning how these materials behave both individually and within perfume compositions.

Why Mixed Media Perfumery?

Natural materials bring depth, richness, beauty and complexity. Pure molecules can add lift, diffusion, stability, texture and entirely new effects that are difficult or impossible to achieve with naturals alone.

When used thoughtfully, synthetics don’t replace natural materials, instead, they extend the perfumer’s language. They can enhance a floral accord, modernise a woody fragrance, create transparency, improve longevity, or introduce abstract effects that make a perfume feel more contemporary.

This course will help you understand how to use them with intention, balance and confidence.

What We Will Cover

During the two days, we’ll explore the foundations of mixed media formulation including how natural and synthetic materials interact, how to balance them in a formula, and how to avoid common mistakes such as overusing powerful molecules or creating blends that feel disconnected.

You’ll be introduced to important molecules and bases used in modern perfumery, including musks, woods, ambers, mossy materials, green notes, lactones, key floral molecules and aldehydes. We’ll look at what they do, where they’re useful, and how they can support or transform naturals.

The course will include guided smelling exercises, practical blending work, accord design and creative experimentation. You’ll have the opportunity to develop your own ideas while receiving guidance and feedback throughout the weekend.

Who This Course Is For

This course is ideal for natural perfumers transitioning to mixed media perfumery, independent perfumers, formulators and fragrance enthusiasts who already understand the basics of perfume structure and want to deepen their practice.

You don’t need to be a professional perfumer, but you should feel comfortable smelling materials, creating simple blends and understanding the difference between natural and synthetic materials, pure molecules and bases, as well as top, middle and base notes.

What Is Included

All materials and equipment required for the weekend are included. You’ll receive guided teaching, practical exercises, course notes, and time to create and refine your own mixed media compositions.

You’ll leave with a clear understanding of how synthetic molecules can help you make the most of naturals and vice-versa, and of how to formulate mixed media fragrances to bring greater performance and originality to your perfumes.

Small group size so places are limited. Don’t miss out!
